Q: Where are you from? Tell us a bit about yourself.

A: I’m Brazilian. I’ve spent one year in living in Hawaii and It was there the first time i’ve seen an aquaponic system. I started a system months ago but I had no basic theory supporting myself, obviously the system came in collapse. 20 Days ago I restarted the system before I had read in your book about the cycling time step by step. Now I know a little about the water elements, fish treatments, volume rate between the fish tank and grow beds and much more information taken from your book.

Q: How are you currently working with aquaponics? Home setup, community greenhouse, etc.

A: What I have is a 500 liters fish tank and 50 liters grow bed. The fishes in use are the same that remained from my first experience so I had no room to put them before cycling the new system. That’s why I decided to stars cycling with fishes, but I have more than I supposed to. They are 15 in 500 liters tank. The good new is that I’m producing two big grow beds and the system are going to be 1:1 (fish tank and grow bed volume).

Q: Tell us about your system. Geek out a bit and tell us all the specs.

A: I’ve change a bit of water daily because the ammonia must be high once I have many fishes and a bit of plants. I’m looking for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate test but it’s been not simple to purchase it. By the way I would like to ask you if is possible to send the water kit test to Brasil.

Q: What plants and fish have you had the best luck with? And the worst?

A: I’m trying the tilapias, and lettuce, basil, mint, cilantro, green anions…

Q: What are your future aquaponics goals?

A: I wish to produce enough greens to sell on my family supermarket in the nonexistent organic section. It would be a big production so I’d need a new big system. Thats why I’m on learning process.

Q: What do your friends say when you show them your system for the first time?

A: Everyone loves it. They say it’s functional and even beautifull.

Q: What’s next for your aquaponic system?

A: I need the water kit tests and after that the water supplements.
