Timberview Farmstead

Fort Worth, TX

Timberview Farmstead is a teaching farm designed to guide visitors toward a more deeply rooted life through farm-based education, culinary experiences, and community-centric programming.

Once the 150-acre campus is fully built, the farmstead will feature businesses and social enterprises providing cash flow for the services and programs provided to the community, along with opportunities for meaningful work.

The Timberview Farmstead aquaponic greenhouse design was a custom project that included building inside of four greenhouse bays & one head house, seven 1,200 gallon fish tanks, seven Growasis Ground Deep Water Culture Raft Systems, 360 self-watering AutoPot Buckets, media beds, and two custom designed nursery systems built on Growasis Elevated Deep Water Culture systems.

The Plants

The primary plant production method in both greenhouse bays is deep water culture (DWC). Our Growasis Deep Water Culture Systems are plant production troughs designed to be scalable, easy to assemble and highly productive. Each trough is equipped with independent controls and aeration systems that drain to and are fed from the fish system located in the head house.

The Fish

Two separate fish systems were designed and installed inside of the headhouse (fish room). Each fish system connects exclusively to one of the two greenhouse bays to supply adequate filtration and nutrients to the plant systems. Some of the equipment and sizing varies between the two systems but each systems maintains identical design principals.

A High Profile PolyGeyser® (HPPG) 25 Cubic Foot Filter was sourced from AST to filter fish solids and cultivate the colony of nitrifying bacteria for the larger of the two plant spaces. Capable of handling large volumes of water under pressure, these PolyGeyser filters gently backwash the rice-sized media multiple times a day to maintain a healthy biofilter. The enhanced nitrification capacity makes this unit ideal for applications with high biofiltration needs such as Timberview’s large nutrient demand for the plants.

As part of our zero-waste approach to aquaponics, this system utilizes tanks to store and mineralize the discharged sludge from the PolyGeyser filter. We installed (2) 500 gallon conical bottom mineralization tanks to further extract nutrients from the expelled solids. After a brief period in the tanks, the mineralized water will be introduced into the plant sump for added nutrient retention and supplementation.

Equipment

No two farms are ever alike. We provide several options for our farmers so that each farm has the equipment and resources available to succeed from start up to harvest.

To handle the high flow rate of water through the system, each fish system has a Titan Sequence water pump. Each pump works in tandem with a basket strainer for extra solids filtration.

The main plant grow-out spaces do not require supplemental grow lighting due to the abundant Texas sun. However, the custom nursery system is positioned above the transplant DWC, so we installed Infinity XE full spectrum LED grow lights for the bottom tier.

Monitoring is critical for peace of mind when you’re away from the farm. The wifi-enabled HYDROS monitor was installed with various probes and sensors to track pH levels in both the fish and plant sump, water temperature, flow rate, leak detection, and water level sensors.

Timberview

The Greenhouse at Timberview Farmstead is a state-of-the-art controlled environment system provides year-round food production using aquaponics as its main growing system.

By integrating nutrient-dense water from the greenhouse, the one-acre outdoor regenerative market-garden will grow healthy, natural, and sustainable seasonal produce to pair with the year-round production of the Greenhouse.
